Mariah clicked and typed on her computer. It was going to be kind of hard to get to Idaho from Texas. This would have to be an inside job. She sighed as she re-read her e-mail to agent Chisolm.

‘Dear Mr. Chisolm,
This is Mariah Bronson. I’m sure you remember me from your previous work with my family. At my new school there is a ghost rumor running around, and I thought you might like to hear about it.’

Mariah repeated the whole ghost story and hit the send button. As she got up to leave her room her computer started beeping. She had mail.
“Well agent Chisolm, you sure aren’t busy today!”

"Dear Mariah,
It’s nice to hear from you again! I would have to go through very many legal channels before I could 'leagally' investigate this case, but I’m sure I can find another loophole. Please talk to your parents and tell them I enjoyed our previous case. Tell them to e-mail me tomorrow to make sure we have everything in order. I will start this case right away.
Sincerely,
Agent Chisolm"

“Well, this certainly is a nice surprise!” Mariah jumped at the sound of her brother’s voice in the doorway, not realizing she had read the e-mail out loud.
“You stay here, let me go get mom and dad.”

“Agent Chisolm! What a pleasant surprise!” Mariah had caught her mom and dad up on the case, but she hadn’t told them agent Chisolm was coming. She thought a surprise would be better.
“Sharon! Where’s Charles? I’m sure your daughter has caught you up on everything.”
“Yes, she did, but she didn’t tell us you were coming!”
“Well, that’s Mariah for you! I’ve known that girl since she was three years old and every time I see her she still never ceases to amaze me. I’m very impressed that she found where the boy was and why they took him all within one weekend.”
“Well, after she found it we were impressed, too!”
"Yes. Once she clued us in on the boys location, everything unraveled from there.”
Mariah spoke next.
“Agent Chisolm, that was the easy part. Can you explain the rest of it to me?”
“Well, Broderick was kidnapped after all, just like you said, but not my who you might think. His own club, Blitz K, kidnapped him. But they weren’t a real club. See, the government had a group of high school kids out looking for kids who were staring down the wrong path, on their way to becoming delinquents. The parents would have to call a number, and that would connect them to the project. Broderick’s parents had always suspected that he was going off track, and they were in on the whole thing. After the Broderick was kidnapped from the store by two of the club members, he was taken to the mansion you found and kept there with his parents for rehabilitation and counseling. The whole thing was a setup. The government paid actors to pretend they lived in a certain place so that when the club’s newest member broke in, he would think he was breaking in to a real house. But nobody ever made it to the last challenge. They would all disappear, just like Broderick Peters. They’re families would agree to silently disappear from society. And when their kids were okay again, they would silently come back. Broderick Peters was a special case, though, and that’s why he was gone so long. This project, called Blitz K, was so secret that nobody knew about it in my neck of the woods. If they did, I would have known not to fly out there and bust through the door with a bomb squad! But now all is done, and we can all go back to our normal lives.”
“Uh, Mr. Chisolm? I’m not sure how normal our lives can get. We do undercover governement work, remember? Still, it’s exciting to be an undercover worker at fourteen. To bad I can’t tell anybody!”
“Well, you will be able to someday. You'll be able to tell your children and grandchildren how you were a secret agent," Chisolm said. He picked up his glass of tea. “Here’s to Mariah, the world’s best kid detective!”
